Alright, let’s get into it. I see you. I see you planning your outfits, getting your little #SummerLooks together. You’re booking the trip, you’re getting the haircut, you’re trying to get that perfect “carefree” picture for the ‘gram.
But I can also see what you’re still dragging behind you.
You’re trying to put on a new, hot, summer outfit, but you’re still wearing the same old, musty, winter coat of your past. You’ve got baggage with you that is so heavy, so old, and so out of season that it’s ruining the whole look.
So, listen to me, and listen good. This is your official, non-negotiable intervention. Your past does NOT determine your future!
I can hear you already. “But, Matt, you don’t understand what they did to me.” “But you don’t know the mistakes I made.” “But I’m broken.”
Stop. Just stop it.
We all have a past. We’ve all got a list of exes that make us want to change our name and move to a new country. We’ve all got a ‘Chapter 5’ we don’t read out loud. We’ve all been a hot mess. We’ve all been hurt.
Congratulations, honey. You’re human.
But you have got to stop acting like your past is a life sentence. It was a lesson, not a prison. You are letting experiences that are dead and gone, and people who are probably not even thinking about you, live rent-free in your head. And let me tell you, that head-space is prime real estate, and you’re letting a bum live in it.
You know what your new #SummerLook needs to be? Accountability. It’s time to take your power back.
Your future is a blank page. Your future is a clean slate. And you are the only one holding the pen. Stop letting the ghosts of your past tell you what to write. Stop letting that broke-down, dusty version of you make the decisions for the fabulous, powerful person you are today.
You are not your mistakes. You are not what happened to you. You are what you choose to be, right now, in this moment.
You wouldn’t wear a stained, ripped-up, dirty old sweater to a pool party, would you? Then why are you bringing that old, toxic energy into this bright, beautiful, brand-new season of your life?
It’s time to let that crap go. Forgive yourself. Forgive them (not for them, but for you, so you can stop carrying them). Drop the dead weight.
Your new look is confidence. Your new look is healing. Your new look is walking forward with your head held high, unbothered, and too busy building your future to even glance at the past.
Now that is a summer look.
